Launch of free Climate Change elearning module in collaboration with the University of Lincoln
Working in partnership with the University of Lincoln, we have produced a bespoke eLearning module focused on Decarbonisation in the Humber for students aged 11-17 at schools across the Humber Region. The module aims to provide an insight into the Career Opportunities and an overview of the sector on their doorstep. Our Director, Shane Traill, a UNA Greater Lincolnshire member, is deeply committed to driving Climate Action and was eager to introduce this innovative learning initiative in the Humber. Leveraging our expertise in Education and Renewables in the region, we were proud to contribute to this project and help raise awareness.
The module is free to access. You can also access the link through the URL https://climatechangehumber.firstlearn.co.uk/ - please feel free to share!
Shane recently caught up with Dr Geeta Lakshmi, who gave an overview of the full project…
We are pleased to announce that, in October 2023, we successfully secured funding from the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC, UKRI) for our project, Inspiring Young Minds: Work Skills Readiness for Decarbonisation in the Humber. The project aims to explore young people’s knowledge, awareness, and willingness to pursue careers in the green sector, with the goal of addressing knowledge gaps through workshops in schools.
To extend outreach beyond physical workshops, we allocated the funds to develop E-materials primarily for schools (ages 11-17) and the wider public. Based on a survey of 839 students across schools and colleges, our findings revealed a partial understanding of the topic, coupled with climate anxiety and low motivation to pursue green careers. Many students cited social media, particularly TikTok, as their main source of information, which correlates with the lack of motivation and the inadequacy of the information received. This trend was more pronounced among female students compared to males.
First Media has professionally crafted the E-materials, making an urgent but often dry subject both engaging and accessible. The content includes essential knowledge on climate change, practical steps individuals can take, global deadlines, the local economy of the Humber, and inspiring stories of women in the field. Additionally, a dedicated section on jobs and careers outlines salaries, job titles, and pathways to apprenticeships and employment.
Our business partner, CATCH (Stallingborough), has also contributed to the development of the E-materials and is now responsible for hosting them for their apprentices.
We would like to thank the excellent service provided by First Media and CATCH in helping us with this important task as well as IDRIC for funding us. The resource can be accessed by https://climatechangehumber.firstlearn.co.uk/ and are also accessible on IDRIC’s site https://idric.org/resources/training-climate-change-awareness-and-future-career-opportunities/.
Franklin College, Grimsby plans to use the module to help their students in career sessions.
