Embedding Quality in Project Management
Raising standards in rail infrastructure
The challenge
Network Rail is responsible for delivering one of the most complex and heavily used rail networks in the world. With such a critical role in national infrastructure, maintaining high-quality standards across projects is non-negotiable.
To support this, Network Rail approached First Media to create a new learning module for senior colleagues, focusing on the role of Quality in Project Management. The brief was clear: the module needed to explore the full lifecycle of Quality — from planning and assurance through to control and continuous improvement — and it had to be fully accessible, responsive and interactive.
But more than that, it needed to stick. Colleagues needed more than definitions — they needed context, clarity and confidence to apply quality processes across their projects.
Making it meaningful
The solution
Using Rise as our authoring tool, we set out to create a sleek, modern and fully responsive module that worked seamlessly across devices.
We collaborated closely with Network Rail to ensure content aligned with their existing frameworks, language and expectations. Real-world relevance was crucial, so we wove in a range of practical examples, relatable scenarios and bite-sized case studies drawn directly from the world of rail project delivery.
To bring the content to life, we incorporated custom animation, Synthesia mixed with video content, visual storytelling and interactive elements such as flip cards, process walkthroughs and short knowledge checks to encourage reflection and application.
Quality Assurance and Quality Control were unpacked clearly — distinguishing the two in both theory and practice — while the importance of Lessons Learned was highlighted through narrative-led examples showing the real cost of quality gaps (and the value of getting it right).
The results
The new Quality in Project Management module is helping senior colleagues across Network Rail understand and apply quality principles in a practical, project-based context.
By combining structured content with interactivity, animation and real-life examples, the module makes Quality feel less abstract — and far more actionable.
It’s supporting a wider cultural shift too — helping teams across the organisation embed a stronger, shared understanding of quality processes that will ultimately lead to better, more consistent project outcomes.
