Building an Inclusive Future: The University of Oxford’s EDI eLearning Module
The Challenge
The University of Oxford needed an engaging and meaningful way to deliver Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) training across its vast academic community.
Their aim was not merely compliance, but fostering deeper reflection and behaviour change.
The existing materials lacked consistency, interactivity, and personal connection—especially for a University with learners spread across multiple colleges, roles, and contexts.
The Solution
Working with the University of Oxfords team, First Media transformed the concept into a bespoke, visually vibrant and modern eLearning module built on our user‑friendly bespoke FM Framework.
Key features included:
- Custom illustration style inspired by Oxford’s identity—subtle nods to spires, quads, and diverse campus life—ensuring learners feel immediately connected to their context.
- Interactive activities & knowledge checks such as drag-and-drop reflections, scenario-based quizzes, and branching choices that immerse learners in real-world EDI situations within an Oxford setting.
- Embedded face‑to‑face video interviews with members of the EDI team, filmed on campus, offering personal storytelling and lived‑experience insights to build emotional resonance and trust.
- Mobile-optimised design, allowing learners to access the module flexibly across devices, whether preparing between lectures, in colleges, or remotely.
The Impact
The module was met with enthusiastic adoption across colleges and departments—learners reported it was not only informative, but emotionally engaging.
The intuitive design and interactivity encouraged deeper reflection, and the inclusion of EDI team voices strengthened authenticity and accountability.
Early feedback indicated a marked increase in learner commitment to inclusive actions within their teams and studies.
Why It Worked
- Distinctive identity alignment – Oxford‑themed visuals gave the module immediate recognition and gravitas.
- Engagement through interactivity – Realistic scenarios and embedded knowledge checks kept learners active and reflective.
- Authentic voices – EDI team videos brought the subject to life, grounding it in real people and perspectives.
